Call to Action 2020! Help Us Get Your Voice Heard for More Research Funding!

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy is embarking on a new and heightened campaign to make more funding available for research on peripheral neuropathy.

For 2020, we are building on our efforts from 2019 to increase our efforts and build awareness in both the Senate and the House of Representatives of the importance of including peripheral neuropathy among the disorders and conditions eligible for research funding under the Department of Defense’s Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP).

We are asking you now to contact your senators and representatives in Washington, D.C., in order to pave the way for more funding for research on peripheral neuropathy.

We need your help for this important initiative! Your voice can help increase spending for research on peripheral neuropathy!

The Campaign: Get PN included in the DoD Research Funding Budget

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has initiated an advocacy program to promote research on PN through a Defense Department Fund that supports medical research.

Every year, Congress (both the House of Representatives and the Senate) approve DoD’s budget though enactment of the Defense Appropriations Act. Within this massive spending bill, Congress allocates roughly $1 billion for a variety of medical research programs designed to address specific health challenges faced by our men and women in the Armed Services. Later this year, when the Senate Appropriations Committee “marks up” its version of the fiscal year 2021 Defense Appropriations Act, it will list within the bill the conditions that are eligible for study under a $360 million research program known as the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). Every year, the Senate lists several dozen conditions. In order for a condition to be included in this list, at least one senator must submit a request for that condition to the Appropriations Committee.

Senators have many competing requests for budget appropriations. The senator needs to understand the condition and be asked by constituents to include the condition in the budget before the senator will support a condition-specific request.

FPN is again advocating to the Senate and the House of Representatives the importance of including peripheral neuropathy among the eligible conditions for research funding.

What can you do?

Please contact your representatives in the House of Representatives and in the Senate – and make him/her aware of the importance of medical research funding on peripheral neuropathy. Urge him/her to contact the Senate Appropriations Committee and to include peripheral neuropathy among the disorders and conditions eligible for funding under the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program in the fiscal 2021 Defense Appropriations Act.
