Peripheral Neuropathy Research Funding under Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP)

Funding Peripheral Neuropathy Research

The Department of Defense’s CDMRP program offers a series of funding opportunities for medical researchers.   One of the CDMRP’s programs, the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) , includes peripheral neuropathy for the first time as an eligible condition for funding in 2021.

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy led a grassroots effort to advocate for the inclusion of peripheral neuropathy in the PRMRP.   Please see here [1] for an update on these efforts.

Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program

The PRMRP funds high-impact, innovative research.  For FY 2021, Congress allocated $370MM for the PRMRP.   The PRMRP will accept research proposals covering 42 focus areas, including peripheral neuropathy.

Eligibility

All organizations, including foreign organizations, foreign public entities, international organizations, and government agencies are eligible to apply for a PRMRP grant.    Principal Investigators (PIs) are able to apply for funding through an eligible organization.

Research projects may be one year or multi-year. All dates and timelines relevant to the project will be announced in mid-March at: https://cdmrp.army.mil/  [3]

The review process involves two tiers of review by both scientific and consumer panelists.  Funding recommendations are based on scientific merit, adherence to award mechanism’s intent, innovation, impact, feasibility, and relevance to military health.
