Tai Chi for Balance and Quality of Life Tai Chi is said to be a helpful form of exercise for people who want to improve their balance and increase their strength. It is also suggested to be a good exercise for people with nerve and neurological disorders. Tai Chi involves slow, deliberate movements called forms, coupled with breathing, visualization, and concentration that can build strength, improve movement and function, and reduce stress. A recent article from Brain and Life magazine gives insight into why the exercise works, how it is done, and some suggestions on where to find out about classes. You can read more in the article here. Want to give Tai Chi a try? Tai Chi classes are becoming increasing more popular, and can be found at community centers, senior centers, health clubs, gyms, or martial arts studios. Some of the support groups listed on the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy website (including the Neuropathy Alliance of Texas) either offer tai chi or sometimes arrange for tai chi classes for their groups. (check the FPN website here for contact information.) One program suggested in the article is called Moving for Better Balance which was developed by the Oregon Research Institute, specifically focusing on fall prevention and balance. Read more here. Classes are offered at some YMCA locations (check here), and in other locations across the country. |
