Peripheral Neuropathy Advocacy Update

In March 2019, the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy initiated an advocacy program to promote more government spending on peripheral neuropathy research through the DoD’s medical research fund. To learn more about the campaign, and what we did for the campaign, please read here.

PN Advocacy Update

We recently found out that the initial Senate version of the fiscal year 2020 Defense Appropriations Act does not include our request to designate “peripheral neuropathy” among the disorders and conditions eligible for research funding under the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). This version was recently approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee, but has not yet come before the full Senate.

We are deeply disappointed that our request was not included, but we haven’t given up our efforts.

What You Can Do Next

If you contacted your senators earlier this year to make this request, please use the sample message below to express your disappointment, and urge your senators to continue working through the remainder of this year and next to ensure that peripheral neuropathy is ultimately included in the PRMRP.

  • Find the contact for your senators here.
  • Go to your Senators’ website pages/online contact forms
  • You will be asked to fill out a form with your name, address, and message. Where the form asks for your message, copy in the following sample message:

Dear Senator,
Earlier this year, I contacted you to urge you to formally request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations that “peripheral neuropathy” be designated among the disorders and conditions eligible for research funding under the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP).
Unfortunately, the Senate version of the fiscal year 2020 Defense Appropriations Act that was recently approved by the Senate Committee on Appropriations did not include this request. On behalf of the more than 30 million Americans coping with peripheral neuropathy, we are deeply disappointed that this request did not appear to receive the necessary support from you and your colleagues to be included in the committee’s list of PRMRP conditions.
On behalf of the veterans, military families and civilians dealing with this debilitating condition, we hope that you will work with your colleagues to amend the Defense Appropriations Act when it comes to the floor of the Senate, to ensure that peripheral neuropathy is included in the final version approved by the Senate, and ultimately enacted into law by Congress.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Your Voice STILL Matters!

Together, we can bring more awareness and, hopefully, more funding for research on peripheral neuropathy.

We thank you for your efforts now and into the future.
