UB Study to Identify Molecular Process Leading to Peripheral Pain

A faculty member in the UB medical school has received a $1.2 million federal grant to study the gating mechanism of a temperature-sensitive ion channel protein found abundantly in peripheral nerve endings. The research by Feng Qin, associate professor of physiology and biophysics, on the vanilloid receptor TRPV1 could lead to new drugs that target …

Equivalency of Tricyclic Antidepressants in Open-Label Neuropathic Pain Study

Researchers from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and the University of Calgary, just published results of a study to compare adverse effects, tolerability and efficacy of the tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) amitriptyline and nortriptyline in management of neuropathic pain due to peripheral neuropathy (PN). Their results show that amitriptyline and nortriptyline are …

Voltage Gated Sodium and Calcium Channel Blockers for the Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Pain

Inflammation associated with chronic pain states is deleterious to health and often debilitating for the patient. It has been hypothesized that pain of inflammatory origin may evolve into a condition that resembles neuropathic pain. This review by researchers from the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology, University College London considers the therapeutic potential for sodium …

Comparative Efficacy of Oral Pharmaceuticals for the Treatment of Chronic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain

The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy of oral medications on chronic peripheral neuropathy since studies typically report of short-duration outcomes and fail to account for medication tolerability. Seventeen studies were compared and results found that pregabalin and duloxetine had the highest beneficial effects for chronic neuropathic pain.  READ MORE Source: Pain Medicine
